Playwrighting and Cartooning

 

After writing poetry, plays and short stories at University Andrea spent several years workshopping, script-editing and developing others' work before returning to writing herself. To date she has written for theatre, radio and film..  She has also published a book of cartoons.

Andrea has just completed The Trumpet & The King, a play about the young Henry VIII and the black trumpeter, John Blanke.


Projects:

  • The Trumpet & The King - touring NI theatres in March & April 2023.
  • Me You Us Them - adapted for film by Melting Pan Productions, England
  • King George's Speech - a theatre piece and a film commissioned by Belfast City Council as a result of the centenary of the creation of Northern Ireland.
  • Cookie & Sue - currently with Greenlight Productions, Ireland
  • Me You Us Them - a play about race and identity in Northern Ireland, inspired by over a thousand hours of interviews and workshops across the province.  Staged reading in Aug 2017, followed by full tour in Feb and March 2018, starring Stefan Dunbar and Melissa Dean.
  • Mi Mundo - an immersive three hander inspired by the 33000 married British Citizens who are unable to return to Britain with their non-EU families under new British Immigration law. (Crescent Arts Centre, NI Tour Jan-Feb 2016 and again 2017)
  • Eternally Scrooged - a full length Christmas show with a cast of 7 - a witty, adult-oriented reworking of A Christmas Carol, about a romance writer with a heart of stone (Theatre at the Mill, Newtownabbey, Nov 2013-Jan 2014)
  • Hermione & Paulina – a two-hander written and performed for Fickle Favours TC (Belfast Black Box & Down Arts Centre Mar-June 2013)
  • All At Once I Saw A Crowd – an English & Cantonese play set in Belfast, London, Hong Kong & Greenland, written for a cast of eight.  Three story lines spanning 1408 - 2060.
  • The Ulster Kama Sutra – originator, researcher and one of three co-writers on the massively successful adult puppet comedy project.  Sold out the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival 2012, Belfast Grand Opera House Baby Grand & NI tour 2013 with rave reviews.
  • The Oul’ Country – a funny and tenderl feature film script set in Toronto and Ballycastle, NI, exploring the seemingly endless appeal of the 'Irish cliche' and what it means to those outside Ireland, in this case, a put upon Ukraine Canadian boy from North York.
  • Top 40 UK finalist in BBC College of Comedy Competition 2008
  • Guru on the Couch – a comedy fiction short set in present day Belfast – April 2008
  • Killing the Dogs – a half hour film script based on 14th Century Greenland – Dec 2007
  • Is It Me? – Hour-long comedy commissioned and performed for BBC Comedy Northern Ireland 2007
  • It’s Not All Rain & Potatoes - Comedy show co-written with Anthony Toner and Nuala McKeever, Belfast Grand Opera House, and full regional tour 2007.
  • Christmas Carol – an adaptation with music from the original Dickens performed lecture – performed at the Riverside Theatre in 2003
  • Cinderella – an original script with songs based on an rediscovered 18th century pantomime, with music, performed at the Palace Theatre, Westcliff, in 2001
  • High Touch – a live hour long sketch comedy show co-written and performed in Canada whilst at University
  • The Myth of Procris and Cephalus – adaptation of a Greek tragedy written and performed in Canada whilst at University
